Puri is one of the four dhams or holiest Hiindu pigrimage places in India.  Buddhists believe Puri was the hiding place for Buddha's tooth before it was spirited away to Kandy in Sri Lanka.  religious life in Puri revolvees around the great Jagannath Mandir (temple), which is closed to non-Hindus.  Puri's other attraction is its long, sandy beach populated by strolling families, cows, camels and vendors.
